Prime Minister Gillani said that let me first congratulate those who have been awarded degrees in today’s ceremony and particularly the students recognized for their outstanding achievements. Indeed, these degrees have put more responsibilities on your shoulders to face challenges of tomorrow. It means you are a qualified scholar now and will play your role in resolving the national and international challenges we are facing.

Prime Minister Gillani said that I also extend my felicitations to your teachers, mentors and parents who helped you reach where you are today radiating with confidence and energy to realize your cherished dreams in life. The present democratic government has always recognized the importance of higher education and it will be pertinent to mention over here that it was Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who upgraded Jamia Abbasia to the Islamia University of Bahawalpur in 1975.

It has been endeavour of the Government to encourage and support the youth and students community to excel in your fields of specialization. However, now is the time to pay back. Prime Minister Gillani said that this is the time that you start supporting your nation. Look around you. Sort out a daily life problem that haunts many of your country fellows and think what you can do about this problem. Prime Minister Gillani said that Can you come up with a resolution, a strategy, and a technique that may help people live a better life? Can you help your nation to be competitive enough in today’s global economy? Can you transform your institution in to a research hub where scholars can deliberate about the challenges being currently faced by the humanity in general and your nation in particular? Your teachers, mentors and supervisors have given you’re their best. Can you take a step forward and pay back the nation?

Prime Minister Gillani said that The Government of Pakistan has been making earnest efforts to improve literacy rate and promote education with a particular focus on the higher education. New initiatives proposed by the scholars of your caliber are being provided financial support to undertake research. We are determined to do whatever is required to uplift the socio-economic stature of the people.

Prime Minister Gillani said that I am happy to learn about the achievements of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. It is not easy to run such a wonderful higher education institution in a far flung area like Bahawalpur. We recognize and provide full support to the Islamia University of Bahawalpur in imparting higher education in Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalnagar through its sub-campuses. I appreciate the vision of the IUB administration and hope that the University will be among the top best institutions of the country.

Prime Minister Gillani said that while the Government is fully committed to support its Higher Education Institutions, we expect that our Higher Education Institutions will train and groom our youth to become the best in the world. We would like these institutions to maintain the spirit of excellence and generate new avenues of sustainable growth. I agree with the Vice Chancellor of IUB that in this era of science and technology, no nation can progress without developing a knowledge-based economy. Your efforts of establishing centers of excellence in various modern sciences and exploring the national resources in Cholistan are commendable.

Indeed, emerging technologies like Biotechnology and Information Technology are the future of this globe. Prime Minister Gillani said that we need to train our youth in these emerging technologies. We need to establish more institutions to produce a large number of highly skilled professionals, the ones who can plan and develop strategies to solve our issues of poverty, pollution and population. Progress on these fronts will eliminate a variety of threats like illiteracy, intolerance, environmental degradation and human right violation.

However, besides conducting scientific research in laboratories we also need to boost and improve the moral and social values of our culture. Prime Minister Gillani said that I am sure that Khawja Fareed Chair can play a very important role in this regard. Spreading the poetic version of this great saint’s philosophy can help us build a nation that is morally and ethically strong.

Prime Minister Gillani said that I direct the Auqaf department to look into the needs of this Chair and provide sufficient funds on a regular basis so that this Chair may actively pursue the setting up of library, museum and art gallery and organize seminars, lectures and conferences about personality, poetry and teachings of Hazrat Khawaja Sahib.

Prime Minister Gillani said that the goal of sustainable development can only be achieved if our population is healthy and lives in a healthy environment. The Vice Chancellor’s vision of establishing a modern medical institution and centers for Agricultural Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Industrial, Pharmaceutical and Translational Biotechnology are, indeed, need of the time.

Prime Minister Gillani said that I therefore, announce a special grant of Rs.20 million to construct the infrastructure required to host your Biotech-based Medical Institute. I am sure the establishment of this center will equip the scholars to conduct research to develop vaccines and biotech based medicine. Bahawalpur is well suited to establish this tropical medicine center that will fulfill our indigenous needs as well those of our brotherly Muslim countries.

I congratulate you, Mr. Vice Chancellor, and the members of your staff, on the success of your College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences in developing an excellent variety of cotton, the IUB222. I hope your team will continue its march in this direction and contribute a lot more new and better varieties of various cash crops.

Prime Minister Gillani said that today we have conducted the ground breaking ceremony for construction of the academic block of this college. I hope you will have a beautiful College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences in a short period of time. I announce a cash prize of five lacs rupees for the IUB222 project leader and his team and hope that this will encourage and inspire the fellow scientists to embark upon similar projects.

Prime Minister Gillani said that I also take this opportunity to extend my felicitations to the scholars who have received Ph.D. and M. Phil degrees including His Excellency, Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Ibrahim Al Ghadeer, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for being the first recipient of the honorary degree of Doctorate from the Faculty of Islamic Learning of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur.

I know from my personal experience that on the direction of Khadim-al-Harmin-al-Shareefain, Honorable Ambassador Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Ghadeer has contributed enough for Pakistan. His efforts for rehabilitation of the flood victims in 2011 were commendable. Prime Minister Gillani said that at the end, I would like to thank the administration, the faculty and the students of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur for inviting me as the Chief Guest for the IUB Convocation 2012.APS NEWS AGENCY ISLAMABAD
