ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for CADD Dr. Younus Soomro has said that the education system needs major reforms that can only be fruitful if the experts, policymakers and civil society representatives consult each other to do some tangible actions related to the ground realities of education in Pakistan.Dr. Younus Soomro said that  this strategy can only be workable for the attainment of every child’s fundamental right to education as per Article 25-A of the Pakistani constitution.
Federal Minister for CADD  Dr. Younus Soomro expressed these views in Occasion of the Education Walk in connection with Global Action Week (GAW)  organized by Pakistan Coalition for Education (PCE) event in F-9 park.
Global Action Week (GAW) is an event organized by the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) every year. This year the theme is ‘every child needs a teacher’, it is to celebrate the impact teachers have on children. In Pakistan GAW is carried out by Pakistan Coalition for Education (PCE), GCE’s official partner in the country. GAW’s purpose is to highlight the current lack of education in the country and its setbacks as a whole and enlighten the masses as to how they can play their part in overcoming the educational dilemma.
There were three events planned by PCE in lieu of GAW this year in which over 700 students from private and public schools participated. On 25th April PCE organized “Teachers’ Day Out” in the F-9 Fatimah Jinnah park. Approximately 400 to 500 students and teachers took part in the event. The day started with a small march by the students while a band played national songs. This was followed by awards being given to the best students and teachers from various schools. After this, the chief guest gave a speech on the importance of education and teachers in Pakistan and the event culminated with the students, teachers and the guests signing a banner saying “I vote for education, do you?”.
A small painting activity was held at the PCE premises F-10, it was a teacher-student activity. About thirty to forty students participated from three schools from different stratas of society. The event took place from 10am till 1pm, in between which the participants enthusiastically painted and were also asked about their views on the education system.
The second event was co-arranged with the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP). Two schools participated in after being thoroughly briefed by the ITP Education officers. Posters and leaflets about the awareness of traffic signs and to spread awareness about education, were prepared by PCE and were distributed to different areas by students in Said Pur Village and Golra Sharif. The cooperation of ITP was highly commendable along with the active participation of the children.
The three events were a huge success as the children along with the management team of PCE had achieved what they had aimed for; diverting attention towards the mismanaged education system of Pakistan and urging people to take steps on their part to elevate and enhance it. The participants were highly anxious in getting their views across on the first event and by fervently distributing the posters to the locals in the aforementioned areas.
Through the GAW events, PCE emphasized its demands to the government to:Provide ongoing in-service training and professional development for all teachers, making use of communities of practice and following up on training given.
,Strengthen school leadership and promote the establishment of school management committees that include students, teachers, parents and local community members,          Promote adult literacy program that also empower newly-literate parents to take part in school management and support teachers.
